Sea Turtle Watching lists
Four of the seven species of sea turtles visit Dominica’s shores - Loggerheads, Hawksbills, Green Sea Turtles, and the huge Leatherbacks. Visit Rosalie Bay, Bout Sable, Cabana Bay, Wesley and Calibishie beaches between April and June and you just may catch a glimpse of one of the most fascinating rituals in the animal kingdom. Snorkeling the waters of the Caribbean’s Nature Island posts
Dominica, the Nature Island, ranks as one of the world’s best sites for diving. The water is a clear, cerulean-blue, marine life abounds, and there are plenty of spots to explore—which also happens to be the recipe for a good snorkel. You can go on your own right off the shore, above an undersea volcano, with a guide out into the deep, or from a boat tour or cruise. Reef terraces adorn the calmer, Caribbean-facing side of the island, and you’ll nearly always have 100 feet of visibility.
Uniquely Dominica: The Batibou Experience posts
Driving the northern coast of Dominica, you might spot a wooden sign tacked to a tree on the edge of the road, and painted in blue are the words “Batibou Beach.” In smaller letters, it’ll say entrance is $5 a person, and you’ll pay it—because Batibou Beach is known as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, much less solely on the tiny island of Dominica.
The Complexities of Dominican History: Cabrits National Park posts
Looking at Cabrits National Park across Prince Rupert Bay from Portsmouth, you’ll see a red-roofed structure and two twin hills—sometimes called East and West Cabrit. What you’re actually looking at is Fort Shirley, an 18th-century defensive outpost built by the British. As for the hills, they’re the edges of an old volcano, once entirely separate from the island. The land here juts out into the ocean, separating Douglas Bay from Prince Rupert Bay, a natural bastion for those looking to protect the island.
A 101 Guide to Hiking Across the Caribbean’s Nature (and Adventure) Island posts
When Columbus sailed by Dominica, he thought to himself, “Nah.” It was too mountainous, too rugged, and too wild to warrant a stop. It’s the youngest island in the Caribbean, the others beaten and battered into the flat, sandy beaches you’re picturing—but not Dominica. Sure, beaches line the coasts, but inland is a vast series of volcanoes, gorges, mountains, and waterfalls, each cloaked in the wilds of the jungle.
10 tips for your trip to Dominica, the Caribbean’s Nature Island posts
1. Pack a hiking bag, whether or not you’re going hiking.Dominica is the kind of place where you’re apt to run into a spontaneous outdoor adventure—there’s a great view over that hill, a local recommends a hard-to-find jungle spot to scope out, or your day simply ran long because you lost track of time—and for that, you’ll want to be prepared.
Dominica’s Past: Exploring the Kalinago Territory posts
When the Kalinago Territory was set aside in 1903, it’s likely no one realized it would eventually become a portal to the past. Of all current 26 Caribbean countries, the only home the 3,000 members of the ancient tribe of the Kalinago have left is Dominica. Of course, they don’t call it that. They call it Waitukubuli, meaning “tall is her body.”

Barry's Dream places
Mooring: 20 ft -- Max depth: 90 ft This site off to Mero has two parts, hard to explore in a single dive. The first one is a wall of 6 to 20 meters richly covered with corals and sponges. On the upper plateau, we cross real forests of sea fans. The second part is between 15 and 30m (45 to 90feet) and consists of several rocks placed on the sandy bottom. Some divers have seen eagles rays!
Batalie Reef places
Diving from Batalie beach Max depth: 95ft Day and night, this site offers a magnificent sight due to the variety of fishes. The start of the beach allows a gradual descent ideal for baptisms, beginners or for a first diving season. You can find morays, octopus, basket stars, barracudas…
Batibou Beach places
Perhaps the most beautiful beach on the island, with towering coconut trees and beautiful, gold sand. A great place for a swim, a snorkel or to just soak in the sun.

Boeri Lake places
The Boeri Lake is the highest lake in Dominica at an altitude of 2,850 ft. (869 m) and as such is often shrowded in mist. Located on the slopes of Morne Micotrin in Morne Trois Pitons National Park, it can be reached by a trail a little over 1 mile (45 minutes walk) from the Freshwater Lake.
Boiling Lake places
Before people ever boiled water, nature was doing so wherever a break in the earth’s crust formed a fumarole — the place where volcano meets water. Dominica’s Boiling Lake might be out of the way (by Dominica’s standards), but visiting it will reacquaint you with nature's unending power to surprise.
Bois Cotlette Estate places
Dating from the early years of French settlement in the 1720’s, Bois Cotlette is one of the oldest surviving estates on Dominica. Nestled in a valley within the active Morne Plat Pays volcanic complex, it is the best preserved example of plantation architecture on the island, with its French colonial “Maison de Maitre” and buildings for the processing of coffee, sugar, and cocoa. Visit and take a tour of the estate and its 53 acre pristine setting. Then step back in time and enjoy some freshly roasted Bois Cotlette coffee or food in our early 1800's restored plantation house.
