In January 1958, the Dominica Red Cross Society was founded as a branch of the British Red Cross and was recognized by the Government of Dominica on March 7, 1983, as a national society. The Dominica Red Cross joined the membership of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on March 15, 1989, and was admitted to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies on October 21, 1989. 

The work of the Dominica Red Cross is focused on alleviating poverty by assisting the vulnerable.  With 10 branches around the island, this has allowed the Red Cross to carry on its work in vulnerable communities through the establishment of Community Disaster Response Teams to lessen the impact of climate change, trainings and mitigative projects.

Activities:

• Tarreau Project - The Dominica Red Cross has implemented a project in the Tarreau Community to enhance the capacity of the residents to prepare and respond to the hazards that affect the community. The focus for the project is to have in place a cadre of trained residents as first responders, and also to implement mitigative measures against one of the major hazards affecting the community which is the annual bush fires. To date, 11 residents have been trained as first responders and equipped with the necessary tools for response. A hazard map and community plan were also developed for the community. Working in collaboration with the Forestry Division, a section of the hillside above the community was cleared by residents. Volunteers also replanted with hard woods and fruit trees. The goal is to change the vegetation on the hillside which is prone to fires during the dry season. The project continues with further clearing and replanting to be undertaken.
