Adventure, The Nature Island Way

Two-thirds rainforest. Nine volcanoes. 365 rivers. 29 waterfalls. The longest hiking trail in the Caribbean. And a boiling lake that sits at the center of the earth.

The Caribbean’s Adventure Capital

Named one of National Geographic’s top destinations for 2026, Dominica is the most volcanically active island in the Eastern Caribbean, with terrain so dramatic, so wild, and so alive that no two days here look the same.

UNESCO designated Morne Trois Pitons National Park a World Heritage Site. The Waitukubuli National Trail, 115 miles across 14 segments, is the longest hiking trail in the Caribbean. And the island’s 365 rivers, many clean enough to drink from, run through valleys and gorges that have never been tamed.

Come for one adventure. Stay because there are too many to choose from.

29 Waterfalls. Each One Worth the Hike.

Dominica has 29 named waterfalls. If you visited one every single day, you would need a full month to see them all. Here are the ones you need to know.

Trafalgar Falls

The most accessible of Dominica’s major waterfalls, Trafalgar is actually two falls in one: Papa Falls (85m) and Mama Falls (40m), twin cascades that tumble into pools surrounded by hot spring vents and dense rainforest. A 10-minute walk from the car park leads to a viewing platform. The more adventurous can wade through the river to reach the base of the falls directly. Located in Morne Trois Pitons National Park, just 20 minutes from Roseau.

Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Highlight: Twin falls, hot springs at the base, close to Roseau

Middleham Falls

The tallest waterfall in Dominica, Middleham, drops approximately 60 meters into a wide, cool pool deep inside Morne Trois Pitons National Park. The trail is a 1.5 to 2-hour hike through some of the densest and most pristine rainforest on the island. It rewards the effort with a cathedral-like clearing, the sound of water filling the valley before you ever see the falls.

Middleham is also the source that feeds Emerald Pool downstream.

Difficulty: Moderate
Duration: 1.5 to 2 hours each way
Highlight: Tallest waterfall on the island, pristine rainforest trail

Emerald Pool

Set inside a lush jungle clearing in Morne Trois Pitons National Park, Emerald Pool is one of the most photographed spots on the island. A short, well-maintained trail leads to a jade-green pool fed by a waterfall cascading down a mossy rock face. Swimming is permitted and the water is refreshing even on the warmest days.

Emerald Pool is fed by Middleham Falls above it, and is accessible to most fitness levels, making it ideal for families or visitors with limited time.

Difficulty: Easy
Entry fee: Approx. US$5 per person
Highlight: Lush jungle setting, accessible, stunning colour

Victoria Falls

One of Dominica’s most dramatic and least-visited major waterfalls, Victoria Falls rewards those willing to make the journey. The trail crosses the Victoria River multiple times and requires wading and boulder-climbing to reach the final viewpoint. The remoteness is the point: you will likely have this one to yourself.

Difficulty: Strenuous
Highlight: Remote, wild, and uncrowded

Sari Sari Falls

A 90-minute hike that crosses the Sari Sari River multiple times through lush, uninterrupted rainforest. The falls plunge into a wide pool where visitors can swim. A local guide is strongly recommended. The trail’s remoteness and the river crossings make this one of the island’s great adventure waterfall experiences.

Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous
Highlight: Remote rainforest setting, dramatic river crossings

Spanny Falls

Located near the village of Belles, Spanny Falls is a two-tiered waterfall with a short, accessible trail making it one of the most family-friendly waterfall experiences on the island. The lower fall has a calm natural pool ideal for swimming; a slightly steeper path continues to the upper fall and a larger pool. The full hike takes around 10 to 15 minutes.

Difficulty: Easy
Entry fee: Approx. US$5
Highlight: Two waterfalls in one short hike, great for families

Wavine Cyrique

Possibly the most dramatic waterfall on the island. Wavine Cyrique falls directly from a cliff into the sea, with access via a steep trail involving rope ladders and a cliff descent. It is not for the faint-hearted, but the payoff is one of the most visually striking natural scenes in the Caribbean: a waterfall meeting the ocean, framed by a palm-lined beach accessible only on foot.

Difficulty: Strenuous / adventurous
Highlight: Waterfall meets ocean, rope-ladder trail, total seclusion

Jacko Falls

A lesser-known but beautiful waterfall often included in multi-waterfall day tours, Jacko Falls offers a lush and rewarding trail through the eastern rainforest.

Difficulty: Easy
Walk from car park: 2 minutes
Entry fee: Approx. US$5
Highlight: Most accessible waterfall on the island, maroon resistance history, swimmable pool

More Ways to Adventure

Horseback Riding

Explore Dominica’s coastlines, river valleys, and forested trails on horseback. Guided horseback rides offer a slower, more intimate way to move through the landscape, ideal for those who want adventure at a gentler pace. Routes vary from beach rides to forest trails.

ATV and Off-Road Tours

Dominica’s rugged mountain roads and river tracks are made for off-road exploration. ATV tours take visitors through terrain that is not accessible by car, into the interior valleys, across rivers, and through villages that see very few tourists. A thrilling way to see a different side of the island.

Wacky Rollers Adventure Park

A family-friendly adventure park in the rainforest, easily reachable from the port in Roseau. Wacky Rollers offers zip lines over rivers, rope walks across jungle footbridges, an extreme challenge course, and raft and tube rides on flowing rapids. One of the few experiences in Dominica designed specifically for groups and families seeking structured adventure.

Indian River Rowboat Tour

Just north of Portsmouth, the Indian River leads through brackish coastal wetlands in near silence. Rowboat tours are guided by local boatmen who share the river’s ecology, flora, and history. The canopy closes overhead, and the mangrove roots reach into the water on both sides. One of the most peaceful adventures on the island.

Snorkelling and Diving

Champagne Reef, named for the volcanic bubbles that rise from the ocean floor, is one of the most unique dive and snorkel sites in the Caribbean. The warm volcanic vents create a natural jacuzzi effect while turtles, seahorses, and reef fish move through the bubbles. Scotts Head, where the Caribbean Sea meets the Atlantic, is a UNESCO-recognized marine reserve and one of the Caribbean’s premier dive sites. The Soufrière Outdoor Centre offers 40-mile west coast aquatic exploration packages.

Whale and Dolphin Watching

Dominica is home to a resident pod of sperm whales, the only island in the Caribbean where sperm whales can be reliably encountered year-round. The island is establishing the world’s first sperm whale reserve. Boat tours depart from Roseau and Portsmouth, with high encounter rates for sperm whales, bottlenose dolphins, and spinner dolphins.

Canyoning

Dominica’s steep volcanic terrain and river gorges make it ideal for canyoning. Guided canyoning tours navigate river slots, waterfalls, and natural water slides through the island’s interior. A technical but accessible experience that combines swimming, climbing, and waterfall rappelling.

Kayaking and River Paddling

Sea kayaking along Dominica’s rugged coastline and river kayaking through interior valleys are available through several local operators. The island’s 365 rivers mean paddling opportunities are everywhere.
