MORNE TROIS PITONS NATIONAL PARK
The Boiling Lake
Home to the world’s second largest boiling lake, Dominica’s volcanic interior is unlike anything else in the Caribbean. A churning, mist-covered crater of superheated water sitting at the heart of UNESCO World Heritage Morne Trois Pitons National Park. Reach it on foot through the Valley of Desolation on one of the most legendary hikes in the Caribbean.
THE WORLD’S SECOND LARGEST
A flooded volcanic fumarole reaching temperatures between 82 and 92 degrees Celsius at its edges. One of the most extraordinary natural wonders on earth.
8-MILE ROUND TRIP HIKE
The trail passes through the Valley of Desolation, past sulphur vents, steaming mud pools, and volcanic terrain found nowhere else in the Caribbean.
LICENSED GUIDES REQUIRED
All hikers must be accompanied by a certified local guide. Tours depart from Laudat, approximately 40 minutes from Roseau.
UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE
The Boiling Lake sits within Morne Trois Pitons National Park, one of only two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Eastern Caribbean.
THE HIKE EXPERIENCE
The trek to the Boiling Lake takes 3 to 4 hours each way, crossing river valleys, sulphur springs, and the otherworldly Valley of Desolation. It’s a challenging hike with steep ascents and descents, best suited for travellers with a moderate to high fitness level. Every step rewards you with scenery found nowhere else in the Caribbean.
WHAT TO BRING
Wear sturdy hiking shoes with good grip and pack light: water, energy snacks, a change of clothes, and rain protection. Weather in the interior shifts quickly, so layers are your friend. Many hikers cool off in the warm cascades of Titou Gorge at the trailhead after the return trek.
